The Arts In Education Program features opportunities for both students
and
educators in New York City Department of Education schools to express
themselves creatively through art. Special education students and
educators
all benefit from HAI’s expertise with this program. Curriculum
for students is
enhanced through hands-on arts activities. Teachers and paraprofessionals
learn how to integrate the arts into their classroom curricula.
The HAI program
addresses The New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and
Alternate
Performance Indicators for Students with Severe Disabilities and
The Blueprint
for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. HAI is an authorized vendor
for the New
York City Department of Education. The New York State Council on
the Arts,
Arts-in-Education Program also funds HAI arts in education projects.

Arts Workshops for Special Education Students
Arts activities are tailored to the needs of special education
students in the classroom. Activities are chosen from among
the art forms of music, movement, theater, visual and
electronic arts. HAI’s programs address Alternate
Performance Indicators and the new Blueprint for Teaching
and Learning in the Arts.

School Wide Professional Development for Special Education Teachers
HAI’s teaching artists share techniques and resources for
incorporating the arts in special education classrooms.
Sessions focus on music, visual arts, movement, or computer
art. The program is adaptable for small groups or large
professional development events.
• Intensive Professional Development
Program for Special Education Teachers
Individual teachers and an HAI teaching artist develop arts
activities that enhance the general curriculum of the special
education classroom. Teachers and the HAI artist collaborate
in planning and implementing art-based curricula using
the HAI teaching artist’s expertise.
• Professional Development Seminars
HAI teaching artists provide activities that teachers can use
In their classrooms. Dynamic instruction in the hands-on
workshops address Alternate Assessment Indicators and
adapting the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts
for the special education classrooms.
